Why I don’t offer Deep Tissue Massage
A Shift in How I View Massage Work
Years ago, I removed full deep tissue sessions from my list of massage services in Bellingham. My views have evolved, and so has my understanding of how the body and nervous system respond to pressure. Most importantly, I’ve learned to prioritize the health of both my clients and myself.
Understanding the Nervous System and Deep Tissue Work
As I began studying the nervous system more deeply, I realized that providing deep tissue massage to everyone who asked for it didn’t always make sense, especially not as a full-body treatment.
At the table, I often noticed clients with tight muscles and heightened nervous systems. Even with significant pressure, their bodies sometimes resisted the work instead of releasing. The result? They left sore, and I left exhausted.
Finding What Actually Creates Change
This experience led me to shift my approach to bodywork. I began focusing on relaxation techniques and nervous system regulation before applying deeper pressure. Once the body felt safe, the results were completely different muscles released more easily, clients felt calmer, and I wasn’t drained at the end of the day.
I now describe my approach as “treatment through relaxation.”
True treatment doesn’t have to hurt. In fact, lasting change often comes from helping the body relax first.
When I Use Deep Tissue Techniques
While I don’t offer full deep tissue sessions, I still use targeted deep tissue and treatment techniques when the body is ready. These moments are precise and intentional, not forceful.
My sessions may include a blend of slow, focused work, nervous system balancing, and gentle pressure adjustments designed to create lasting change without pain.
Protecting My Body and Career Longevity
The average career span for a massage therapist is about six years, often due to overuse injuries and burnout. I’ve been practicing for over eight years, and I want to continue helping people for many more.
To support that goal, I’ve made several changes:
I no longer offer full-body deep tissue sessions.
I use an electric massage table to reduce strain.
I take regular time off to recover and reset.
I practice yoga, strength training, and receive regular bodywork myself.
A Gentle, Sustainable Approach That Works
What does this mean for you as a client? My massage sessions aren’t limited to light touch, they’re deeply effective but guided by your body’s readiness. You’ll still experience meaningful change, but without unnecessary discomfort.
Pain doesn’t equal progress. Real transformation happens when your body feels safe, supported, and ready to release.
